heal.abstract	The typical Cretan Sea water column is characterized by a multitude of water masses, some of local (Surface Water, Cretan Intermediate Water, Cretan Deep Water) and some of distant origin (Modified Atlantic Water, Transition Mediterranean Water). Data collected on a very dense hydrographic network on the Cretan slope during the CINCS experiment revealed the presence of some water type whose characteristics do not fit this pattern. Analysis suggests seasonal generation on the shelf. This slope water could play an important role in transfering heat, salt and oxygen to the deep layers of the Cretan Sea.	en
