heal.abstract The Gulf of Thessaloniki, part of which is the port of Thessaloniki, serves also as bathing resorts. In addition, there is fishing of oysters. It is extremely important that we know the degree of the bacteriological pollution of this water because the untreated sewage of the city runs into this water, as well as the waste of the industrial units. 346 samples of sea water were taken from several points of the Gulf and were bacteriologically examined . At the entrance of the Gulf (24 samples) 3 km from the shore, no E. coli and Coliform were found. 64 samples taken from the eastern side of the harbor (the area around the sea-front is uninhabited and there are industrial installations and at different distances from the shore, were contaminated with coli forms at a rate of 7,8%. 16 samples taken from the harbor were found to be 100% contaminated with E. coli. In the area covering the region from the harbor to about. 6 km out of the city of Thessaloniki 242 samples of sea water were taken. The degree of contamination with. E. coli was 64,51%- 78,66% and with coliforms 71,42%-89,0%. The samples were taken at different distances from the shore. Part of this area is used as bathing resorts. Because of the above, it is concluded that the area of the Gulf of Thessaloniki is highly polluted. It. is also certain that there is a lot of waste coming from the surrounding industrial units. We recommend several measures for protection of the sea-water from pollution-the most important one being treatment of all sewage running into the Gulf. en
