heal.abstract	The Olympic Games-2004 Sailing Center will be constructed in the Agios Kosmas area; the NCMR undertakes a multi-disciplinary base-line study. The results will be taken under consideration during the construction of the planned works for the Olympic Sailing Center. Detailed geophysical investigation of the seabed of the Agios Kosmas coastal area has been carried out using BOOMER, 3.5 kHz and Side Scan Sonar. The results of the survey about the seabed quality, the thickness of the recent sediments, the presence of the rocky substratum on the seabed and the character of the sediments deposited are presented. The water column shows characteristic thermocline from late spring to autumn, dissolved oxygen is high all over the year, whereas nutrients and chlorophyll-a values are low. Surface sediments are sandy with low heavy-metal concentrations but relatively high petroleum hydrocarbons content. The marine area of Agios Kosmas exhibits characteristics of a healthy ecosystem that should be maintained and after the use of the area for the Sailing Center. The area has a particular value because the broader coastal zone of the Saronikos Gulf is highly disturbed by the various (and inevitable) anthropogenic activities. Therefore, all measures should be undertaken to protect the area and future constructions must be prepared with great respect to the environment towards a sustainable and healthy ecosystem.	en
